Take a (Social Media) Break

In case you've missed it, I've been working on being more present rather than mindlessly scrolling through whatever social media feed I've automatically slipped into. That's why I'm inviting you to take a break from social media with me SUNDAY, September 23.

Together, let's take a moment to be here now in our lives. I've written a bit more about it on my blog and included a few tips for your cleanse like making a list of things to do when you feel the urge to click that Instagram icon! I'm also going to give you a little discount incentive! Share your list with us on the blog post or share your post-social-media-cleanse experiences with us in person when you come into the shop and get 15% off your entire purchase through the remainder of September.

Give yourself a (social media) break. You know you deserve it.

March For Our Lives Evil Eye Glove Workshop

March For Our Lives Evil Eye Glove Workshop

March For Our Lives

Please join us at The Nest for an informal workshop led by Gudrun Johnston, a well-known knitwear designer from Scotland, to make Evil Eye Gloves to wear at the March For Our Lives event in Reno on March 24th.

Much like the pink pussy hats for the Women's March, these gloves are meant to show solidarity. The symbolism of the evil eye is an act of protection, but more so than just being defensive, it represents a willful gazing, of not turning away. The gesture of putting them on gloves symbolizes both "hands up, don't shoot" and "stop."

This workshop will take place from 5-8pm on Wednesday the 14th of March, which is also the day of the National School Walk Out.

If you know some knitting basics then you can easily do this project, and there will be knitting help on hand. Please bring US 8 needles, and if you have any spare yarn, feel free to bring it along as well.

Here is a link to the project should you wish to read more about it or get a head start:

http://kristasuh.com/evil-eye-glove/

If you don’t know how to knit (like me!), we will have some alternative materials for making these gloves. Please feel free to bring any felted wool or patch making materials like felt if you have any to spare.

We are trying to make as many of these as we can and will be accepting donations that will be given to the organizers of the march to help fund the event. Any leftover funds will be donated to Moms Demand Action and Nevada Gun Safety Coalition.

We hope you can come and help us create a sea of eyes to take to the march!

Getting Dirty on Valentine's Day Terrarium Class

It’s that time of year again, loves! For the 7th year in a row, we will be hosting our favorite in-store event: our Getting Dirty on Valentine’s Day Terrarium Class. Succulents, air plants and terrariums have gotten super popular in recent years—we like to think it’s because of this class…

WHEN: Wednesday, February 14th at 7pm
WHERE: The Nest
PRICE: $45 in advance/$55 day of
THE GOODS: Everything you need to make your very own terrarium plus dessert and a
glass of wine!

If you’re not up with the trends, terrariums (not ter-an-eums…there’s no “n” in there, folks) are living works of art for your home. We put them together Nest-style—with interesting recycled containers and vintage tchotchkes I collect throughout the year just for this occasion along with the traditional succulents and air plants! Need some more inspiration? Check out our Pinterest board!

Throw in dessert and wine and you’ve got a much less predictable way to spend your Valentine’s Day than the tired dinner, movies, flower combo. Not with a +1? No problem! This shindig goes down family style, so it’s great for groups of friends, new couples not looking for that kind of pressure, you brave solo souls and everyone between! Who knows, you may just meet a new friend or next year’s significant other…

So, roll up your sleeves and play in the dirt with us!

Stop in or email me at tessa@thenestreno.com to reserve your spot soon: this class pretty much always SELLS OUT!

Handwritten Letter Gathering
Sep

6:30 PM18:30

Handwritten Letter Gathering

As an extension of our WeTalks, The Nest—guided by handwritten letter aficionado Megan Allen—is offering a space to switch from digital to analog with a focus on writing handwritten letters. Come explore the many ways to make someone’s day (including your own) through the process of writing a letter.  It can be a near-novel or two sentences on the back of a postcard. It can be addressed to a friend, a loved one or your future/past self. It can be to share gratitude, spill your guts or as a much-needed release. You can send it, tuck it away for future reading or burn it. However you go about it, I guarantee you’ll be glad you did it!

Yes, writing letters by hand takes time and energy, but so do the best things in life. And just like those other things, it is better accomplished with good company. I hope you’ll join us in this cathartic practice every Wednesday evening from 6-7pm at the Rose Gardens at Idlewild Park (as weather permits.)

Themes are loose, but it's always good to have a jumping off point:

September 13. Focus 1: the art of self care and script

September 20. Focus 2: stamp of approval, envelopes with wax seals and politics

September 27. Focus 3: “the world needs more love letters" project and international mailing standards/international discussion

October 4. Focus 4: thank you’s - a session rooted in gratitude
