Handwritten Letter Gathering

As an extension of our WeTalks, The Nest—guided by handwritten letter aficionado Megan Allen—is offering a space to switch from digital to analog with a focus on writing handwritten letters. Come explore the many ways to make someone’s day (including your own) through the process of writing a letter.  It can be a near-novel or two sentences on the back of a postcard. It can be addressed to a friend, a loved one or your future/past self. It can be to share gratitude, spill your guts or as a much-needed release. You can send it, tuck it away for future reading or burn it. However you go about it, I guarantee you’ll be glad you did it!

Yes, writing letters by hand takes time and energy, but so do the best things in life. And just like those other things, it is better accomplished with good company. I hope you’ll join us in this cathartic practice every Wednesday evening from 6-7pm at the Rose Gardens at Idlewild Park (as weather permits.)

Themes are loose, but it's always good to have a jumping off point:

September 13. Focus 1: the art of self care and script

September 20. Focus 2: stamp of approval, envelopes with wax seals and politics

September 27. Focus 3: “the world needs more love letters" project and international mailing standards/international discussion

October 4. Focus 4: thank you’s - a session rooted in gratitude

May Day Baskets with Camryn Lane Florals

In an attempt to reinvigorate a lovely tradition of the past, The Nest invites you to join us in making May Day baskets and spreading some much needed positivity to our friends, coworkers and neighbors.

Event details:
  1. Hand make flower baskets using repurposed materials and flowers from Camryn Lane Florals on Sunday, APRIL 30th at The Nest.  (Each basket is priced 'per piece' based on stem and container selection).

  2. Hang them on the door of your friends and neighbors on Monday, MAY 1st.
  3. Knock and run away (or stay and give them a hug...your choice)!

JOIN US IN SPREADING SIMPLE JOY THIS SPRING!

MAY DAY BASKET HISTORY LESSON:

Having roots in Gaelic traditions from the 1600's, May Day has historically been a Northern Hemisphere celebration filled with flower crowns, maypole ribbons, dancing and the welcoming of Summer.  Celebrated on May 1st, the tradition spread around Europe and The America's; each culture embracing and morphing the day into a seasonal celebration of their own, recognizing the deities of Beltraine and Flora The Goddess of Flowers, or simply spreading happiness and joy for the coming of a new season.

Late 19th century America modified this tradition to include gathering flowers at the end of April's showers, arranging them in pretty paper along with some gifts and candies, and hanging them on the doors of friends and neighbors as a way of welcoming them into warmer weather.  They would hang the basket, knock and run away!  A more positive and uplifting form of doorbell ditching!!
