Garage Sales With Kate Franco of Poshmark

Because I'm feeling particularly antsy for yard sale season to start, this is a #TBT to that time last summer when I was pregnant and my old college friend Kate Franco came to visit. Kate is an SF gal who works for Poshmark, a virtual closet app that lets you buy and sell your clothing right from your phone. She is also my most fashionable friend. The 2,319,212 people following her Poshmark closet and her blog are a testament to that!

Kate and Tessa

Kate and I worked as desk receptionists in Graham residence hall at Santa Clara University back in the day. Even though she just lives a hop skip and a jump away in the bay, our paths don't cross as often as we would like them to. So, you can imagine how happy I was when Chris and I were able to host her and her now fiancee, Ryan, at our house in Truckee for a weekend! Because we are kindred spirits in our love of secondhand, I dragged her around town for some garage sale fun.

I'm so lucky to have been able to call you a friend for almost 10 years now and know a bit about you. For those that don't, tell us a few things we should know about you!

California girl, born and raised. Boho babe at heart. Obsessed with making style personal and attainable; I like to make things pretty. Lover of coffee, and I'm for sure a recovering perfectionist. Currently working on fixing up my SF flat, one room at a time.

Tell us about Poshmark and what you do there.

Poshmark is a marketplace to buy and sell women's fashion and it's AWESOME. I have basically created a revolving closet where, once I get tired of an item, I sell it on the app and then use that money to buy another item. I estimate that 85% of my clothes come from Poshmark. My day job (at Poshmark) is all about the user experience: understanding the merchandise and trends on our platform and, in turn, understanding our users.

How would you describe your style in one sentence?

Some combination of edgy, boho and eclectic; I try not to take myself too seriously, and it's all an evolution anyway!

What do you like about shopping second hand, and how do you find the best stuff at the best prices?

Well, for one, shopping secondhand saves so much money. I'm able to spend 50% less on investment pieces that will last a lifetime. But, I also think there's something really cool about wearing pieces that no one else has.

Poshmark is the main way that I shop resale, and I'm constantly checking the "Just In" section for newly listed items. On Poshmark, you can also make an offer. So, if you're not afraid of a little negotiation, you can score some really killer deals!

Are Chacos still a trending item? I was pleasantly surprised to see that my 10 year old hiking sandals are now fashionable...

Hah! They're super seasonal, so we'll see what happens next summer...

Remember that one time back in college where we drank way too many of those cheap margaritas? Why did we do that? ;)

Ugh. We tried to chug a pitcher of cheap margaritas because.............................. Honestly, I can't come up with a single good reason for inducing the most epic case of brain freeze, ever. Hindsight's 20/20. ;)

When are you going to come visit me again?

Soon, I hope! I need to meet your little man!

Well, there you have it folks! As you can see, Kate is rad, and she has been so gracious to offer all of you read-through-'til-the-end-of-the-post'ers a coupon code. For anyone interested in checking out Poshmark, you can download the app and join with code HBENA. You'll get $5 just for signing up!

Rawbry Grand Opening + The Streets Iz Watching

The week before last was nothing short of a miracle: I got out on the town not once but twice! Since the little man was born, I feel like I've missed out on a lot on great Reno events, so I was ecstatic to make it out to the Rawbry Grand Opening and Joe C. Rock's "The Streets Iz Watching" art show at Sierra Arts--two events that reminded me that our very own burgeoning city houses some amazing talents on par with those of the big cities.

The Basement Reno

Have y'all been to The Basement yet? The old downtown post office building is a beauty for sure, but its basement was a dark, dingy space bordering on creepy. It takes someone with a lot of vision to turn a place like that into a hip new multi-purpose space. Cue Brianna Bullentini who took on the project and transformed it so that you feel catapulted 3,000 miles away into an underground New York hot spot.

I haven't gotten to peruse all of the retail down there yet while they were open, but I always love me some Kalifornia Jean Bar! Christy is a girlboss with impeccable taste! I was also swooning over The Pantry Vault and their handmade skin and body care products and was happy put a face to an Instagram follower's name! (Hi Michelle!)

Brie's personal pet project inside The Basement is Rawbry, a cold-pressed juice bar hang with delicious juices, smoothies, kombuchas and more. Her grand opening was on point with a fashion show by Strange Bikinis and an impressive food and drink spread. I spy Nest finds...

It was great catching up with these crazy kids too...

Reno's Finest

As luck would have it, I got to reconnect with Joe C. Rock who was so very gracious to let me see his art show at Sierra Arts after hours. I'd been wanting to see it but had been having trouble finding the time outside of work and watching the little man.

His installation brought urban art into a gallery setting using mostly graffiti on found materials, creating a gritty street environment inside a white-walled art gallery. I was so impressed with the way it made me forget I was inside an art gallery and not out on a darkly lit street waiting for someone with a can of spray paint to walk by and add their mark onto the colorful walls.

Joe is a wildly talented and creative individual with an even kinder soul and a humility and groundedness not frequently seen on someone so skilled. I highly encourage you all to keep an eye out for his next project--whatever that might be--not only to witness his incredible art and see where his inspiration takes him next, but also to support an artist and person who truly deserves all of the accolades he is given.
